Something that I strive for in my work is honesty, so doing this motherhood photography shoot with Cristina meant so much! She is one of the best humans I know because she isn’t afraid to go against the norm in the name of expansion, truth, and connection. I wanted this session to represent the beauty of motherhood while also demonstrating the power of a woman as a human being.

We began our session on the muted green couch with Christine holding her baby close while doing what mothers do best, breastfeeding. Here we captured the quieter moments of motherhood. Snuggled up, comfy, and calmly staring down at her little one. I wanted to show how there is no one way that breastfeeding should look. Standing up, laying down, or lounging on the couch – it all does the same thing and THAT’S what is important. The connection between these two is truly palpable and reminds me how passionate I am about capturing these mommy and me moments. 

Express yourself through the fits

With an outfit change and studio setup switch, we showed the other side of modern-day mothering. Christina stepped out in THEE cutest black blazer, white shorts, and stunning black heels. The striking simplicity of her silhouette and the power she holds in knowing that there is so much to be proud of as a mother – this is what really stands out to me here. Under her blazer, Christine decided to go bare. A subtle way to say F U to the patriarchy. Over-sexualizing a woman’s body for doing exactly what it was made to do – keep her baby alive – is so 2020, we’re not even going to give it the time of day.

The intention behind motherhood photography

Motherhood photography sessions hold a special place in my heart. Breastfeeding is one of the most intimate and sacred acts that a mother can experience. Christina was the perfect person to display this divine power. I mean can you just tell she was totally in her element??

To all the new mothers out there, I hope this shoot depicts that you can be both a nurturing, present mother AND a working, independent soul. No matter what womanhood or motherhood looks like to you, it’s beautiful. And there’s room for it all.
